Slaves bills of sale, 1848-1850.

The collection consists of two slave bills of sale, made out to the buyer, John C. Greer. The first is for a slave named Pompey. It is dated January 4, 1848, Clarke County, Georgia. Pompey belonged to the estate of James Jennings and was sold at public outcry at the Court House in Watkinsville for $185.00 to John C. Greer. It is signed by James P. Mayne (Executor for James Jennings) and Mordecai Edwards (Witness). The second bill of sale is for a slave named Milly. It is dated February 5, 1850, Clarke County, Georgia. Milly, about 13 years old, was sold to satisfy a mortgage claim of Edward P. Clayton on Philip Clayton. She was sold at public outcry at the Clarke County Court House, for $550.00, to John C. Greer. It is signed by L. P. Thomas (Sheriff).
